Operation Jump Start is a non profit organization that has served the Long Beach community for over 22 years. Our mission to help low resourced, high potential first generation students get in, stay in, and graduate from a four year college. We do this by providing academic and socioemotional support, mentoring, and exposure to a broader world. The VISTA will implement projects including, but not limited to, conducting research that will help determine future programming, develop resource guides as it relates to college success, enter and track student data, and curate content for online and print publications. We are looking for a VISTA that is comfortable dealing with ambiguity, is very positive, take initiative and also has excellent interpersonal skills. The benefit to becoming a VISTA through Operation Jump Start is knowing your contributions matter. By applying for this project, you will help move our three year strategic plan of growing our organization by 600 percent. The work of a VISTA is critical to our success of serving more youth in Los Angeles County. You will learn how to work with a vibrant, dynamic team. You will also learn that while failure is inevitable, it’s how we move forward as a team that helps us become successful. Last, but not least, you will have access to attend various training on college access and success throughout Los Angeles. The proposed project goals for this placement are to 1. increase the number of low-income youth of color who go to and graduate from college and 2. ensure at least 90 percent of College Success Participants receive their BA degree within 6 years of college entrance. Member Duties: The VISTA member will: - provide extensive research on college success programs and databases - track student and program information - help maintain the current student database - troubleshoot database platform issues - create a manual that transfers knowledge of database set-up and management - create various resource guide for college success, scholarships, internships, career transition, and financial literacy topics. - update a list of internships/jobs, scholarships, and tutoring resources for participants to access. - create college, career, and financial literacy webinars for College Success participants (that can also be featured in the e-newsletter).- prepare scheduled updates on College Success student stories to encourage communication among students and other key stakeholders. - help plan effective events attended by College Success youth - create a recruitment model for future college success programming
