The mission of LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program is to provide a safe and supervised after school education, enrichment and recreation program for children ages five to 12 in the City of Los Angeles. Mayor Tom Bradley created LA’s BEST in 1988 in response to challenges arising from increasing numbers of unsupervised children throughout the City during out-of- school-time – especially within under-resourced Los Angeles neighborhoods that are disproportionately impacted by high rates of poverty and crime. LA’s BEST has grown from operating at 10 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary school sites to 193, and currently serves 25,000 children each day during the after school hours, and 6,500 during the summer. The VISTA Alumni and Communications Fellow will develop an active and engaged LA’s BEST alumni network, including young alumni in middle school, high school, college, and those who have completed college. They will organize and engage the older alumni in volunteer, fundraising, resource and partnership cultivation activities, establishing an additional stream of resources and financial support for LA’s BEST. The VISTA will collect and archive stories from stakeholders about the impact of LA's BEST on children, families, and communities.

Member Duties: The VISTA Alumni and Communications Fellow will work with the LA’s BEST development team to create and execute a plan to gather contact information from LA’s BEST alumni, and engage alumni in current organizational activities. VISTAs will organize alumni focus groups to document feedback about alumni's experiences in LA's BEST for quality improvement purposes; addressing the needs of the service demographic and help to move participants out of poverty. VISTAs will visit LA's BEST sites and interview various program stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, teachers, and alumni documenting the impact of LA's BEST on their lives and within their communities.
Resulting anecdotal material will help the organization's development team better convey the power of LA's BEST to both internal and external audiences.

Program Benefits: Living Allowance, Health Coverage*, Relocation Allowance, Reimbursement for Service Travel, Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Childcare assistance if eligible, Training.
