LA's BEST VISTA Quality Improvement & Evaluation Fellow
The mission of LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) After School Enrichment Program is to provide a safe and supervised after school education, enrichment and recreation program for children ages five to 12 in the City of Los Angeles. Mayor Tom Bradley created LA’s BEST in 1988 in response to challenges arising from increasing numbers of unsupervised children throughout the City during out-of-school-time – especially within under-resourced Los Angeles neighborhoods that are disproportionately impacted by high rates of poverty and crime. LA’s BEST has grown from operating at 10 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary school sites to 193, and currently serves 25,000 children each day during the after school hours, and 6,500 in the LA’s BEST Summer Program. The VISTA Quality Improvement & Evaluation Fellow will enhance implementation of a comprehensive continuous quality improvement plan. The LA's BEST Evaluation department ensures on-going assessment of programs and activities and compliance with evaluation requirements. Internal evaluation activities focus on formative concerns like participants' feelings of safety during the after school hours, willingness to discuss problems/concerns with adults, development of students' school interests and higher education aspirations. Internal research also targets other stakeholders like parents to determine their satisfaction with program services.
Member Duties: LA's BEST will train the VISTA Quality Improvement & Evaluation Fellow on qualitative methods and practices, and data processing and analysis. The VISTA will examine how participation in high-quality education, enrichment, and recreation programming during out-of-school-time impacts the development of academic and social-emotional skills and attributes. The VISTA will help develop pre and post program participation protocols to gauge changes in attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors. The VISTA will conduct program observations, and gather, code, analyze and report on data.
Program Benefits: Choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend, Relocation Allowance, Childcare assistance if eligible, Living Allowance, Training, Reimbursement for Service Travel, Health Coverage* .
