Los Angeles Walks seeks a part-time communications associate to support our organization’s efforts. This is a good opportunity to further develop the voice, expand the reach, and make progress towards the advocacy goals of a growing local non-profit organization. About Los Angeles Walks: Los Angeles Walks is a pedestrian advocacy organization that works to make walking safe, accessible, fun, and equitable for all Angelenos. We promote walking and pedestrian infrastructure in Los Angeles, educate Angelenos and local policymakers concerning the rights and needs of pedestrians of all abilities, and foster the development of safe and vibrant environments for all people walking. Los Angeles Walks’ Programs:

  • Pedestrian safety and Vision Zero: eliminating all severe and fatal traffic injuries in Los Angeles by 2025.
  • Safe Routes for Seniors: ensuring that Los Angeles’ quickly growing senior population has safe, accessible, and convenient walking facilities. 
  • Walkability: making walking a more vibrant and pleasant experience through encouragement activities like monthly walks, as well as policy advocacy for sidewalk repair and the legalization of street vending.

About the Communications Associate position: The Communications Associate will report to the Policy & Program Manager and will assist staff and steering committee members in shaping and implementing Los Angeles Walks’ communications plan. The part-time position is based in Downtown LA.


Assist in developing the communications plan

Draft blog posts that educate and engage readers

Develop social media content

Help to maintain social media presence (beyond posting original content)

Assist in writing and formatting e-newsletters

Assist in production of annual Footnotes report

Collaborate with staff on developing new ideas, directions, and venues for communications


  • Essential:
    • Commitment to building a safe, healthy, and equitable Los Angeles
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Self-motivated and able to meet deadlines and track progress with minimal supervision
    • Excellent computer skills, including experience with major social media applications and Google Apps
    • Dependability, flexibility, and sense of humor
    • Interest in developing processes and structure for a growing organization
    • BA or graduate degree, preferably in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, digital communications, or a related field. Students welcome.
    • Personal laptop required
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with media and advocacy communications
    • Proficiency in NationBuilder and InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop
    • Bilingual (Spanish speaker)
    • A love of Los Angeles!

Compensation: $16 to $20 per hour depending on experience

Hours: Specific days and hours are flexible, but 12-16 hours/week, preferably three half-days or two full days in the Los Angeles Walks DTLA Arts District office. This is a part-time, consultant position; the successful candidate will be required to sign a consultant agreement with Los Angeles Walks and Community Partners.
