LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program is a partnership of the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and the private sector providing an after school program to 25,000 children each school day at 193 elementary schools in the most economically distressed neighborhoods throughout LA.

LA’s BEST goes beyond basic education to instill healthy values & build skills in athletics, technology, science & the arts. LA’s BEST is currently seeking a full-time Vice President of Development who is responsible for leading all efforts to raise funds to sustain and expand the work of LA’s BEST. This position must establish sustainable and creative strategies to drive fundraising and implement systems and processes to support the revenue and communication goals, which include the organization’s plan to double private fundraising revenue over the next four years. The VP of Development is responsible for all fundraising, public communications, messaging and branding of the organization.

The VP of Development will supervise a development team of eight and work closely with the President and CEO to cultivate and steward donors, including the governing and young professionals (BEST Friends) boards and as well as new prospects.

This position reports to the President & CEO.


  • Provide leadership for all development activities, working closely with the President & CEO, members of the boards, and corporate and operations staff to keep them informed, motivate and energize their support for and leadership of the organization.
  • Hold accountability for fulfilling the organization’s plan to double private fundraising revenue over the next four years.
  • Manage the development department, including eight staff members.
  • Oversee and develop new fundraising initiatives (e.g. planned giving, digital tools) and focus on improving retention of existing donor base, including corporations, foundations and individuals and find
  • efficient ways to attract new major donors
  • Oversee three major fundraising events and smaller cultivation events with staff, consultants, board members and volunteers
  • Prepare and monitor the fundraising budget; assure adequate control and accounting of all incoming funds and execute legal documents appropriately
  • Oversee foundation and corporate grant applications, reporting and renewals
  • Serve as an effective spokesperson for LA’s BEST, representing appropriately the vision, mission, and values of the organization in all fundraising communications
  • Maintain and utilize a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of fundraising

Qualifications & Experience:

This position requires a creative, passionate, and energetic person with long-term strategic vision, excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to communicate the LA’s BEST story of success. This person must be a critical thinker and a goal-setter with both self-motivation and self-discipline, and must possess passion for providing all children with the resources they need to flourish in today’s world.

A successful candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree and significant development experience (10+ years) with a proven track record of success. Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience and proficiency in all aspects of development with an emphasis on managing a fundraising department, executing fundraising efforts, securing major and planned gifts, maintaining excellent corporate/foundation relations and planning events
  • An understanding of the challenges of both public and private funding sources
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • An ability to assess the impact of potential actions in an a context of multiple funding sources and complex political climate
  • Creativity and initiative in creating new fundraising opportunities within the context of operational and program goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively as a colleague and team builder; work effectively with diverse populations
  • Excellent organizational, project management skills and an ability to cultivate a motivated team of internal staff and board members
  • An ability to work under pressure and to manage multiple tasks
  • Strong business acumen
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and fundraising database programs (especially Raiser’s Edge)
  • A valid California driver's license and automobile insurance are required as well as access to an automobile for local travel.
