JOB SUMMARY

The County Systems Fellow will support the work of the Executive Vice President in his/her capacity of strategically assessing possible alignment of Los Angeles County initiatives and priorities with that of First 5 Los Angeles. The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to: staffing and preparing for meetings with County partners; following up on work resulting from County partner meetings; conducting independent research on topics relevant to County-identified projects; writing up reports and representing First 5 LA in County discussions and meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The County Systems Fellow should visibly demonstrate the adopted organizational values of collaboration, integrity, respect, accountability, purpose, shared leadership and learning in the execution of their key areas of responsibility:

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Represents First 5 LA and the EVP at meetings involving key county and other external partners involving county work
  • By researching and general familiarity with county structures, programs, and projects, assists EVP in assessing alignment to First 5 LA priorities
  • Prepares memos, compiles information and materials to the EVP in support of emerging county work
  • Keeping EVP and others in First 5 LA abreast of emerging issues and projects involving county partnerships
     

Essential Duties:

  • Assesses, plans and organizes work on County projects and initiatives aligned to First 5 LA’s priorities, cultivating and strengthening relationships with County agency staff to identify and advance aligned First 5 LA/County priorities
  • Assesses ways in which First 5 LA’s work might support and eventually be sustained by systems administered and managed by County departments, agencies, and offices
  • Composes summaries and reports on issues and component activities of projects
  • Conducts issue-focused research on best practice and emerging trends in relevant areas
  • Develops and implements internal communication and coordination processes to support First 5 LA colleagues to understand and leverage County systems and programs as potential platforms for First 5 LA projects and initiatives
  • Assesses First 5 LA’s portfolio of work and relevant County priorities to identify areas of alignment
  • Works collaboratively across First 5 LA teams, assessing when to hand off/pick up projects as necessary
  • Through the EVP, engages County partners via discussions, meetings, participation in workgroups
  • Supports the EVP on work related to First 5 LA/County projects, through verbal and written updates as needed
  • Provides research and information on relevant topics to support emerging work, drawn from best practices and research, including in areas outside of LA County
  • Creates work plans and timelines for First 5 LA/County projects and work
  • Leads projects, representing First 5 LA in various meetings, discussion, groups
  • Presents information and relevant materials to various groups
  • Composes short project descriptions, summaries, findings and recommendations for internal and external distribution

Experience:

Minimum of three years of experience in a related field preferred

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus on political sciences, social services, education, health or related field preferred
  • Advanced degree a plus
     

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to use widely supported internet browsers
     

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
  • Valid automobile liability insurance
