Reporting to the National Field Director, the National Organizer and Training Coordinator is an integral member of Bend the Arc’s field team, and is responsible for managing Bend the Arc’s relationships with action-takers in areas without existing Bend the Arc chapters to meet campaign objectives and build a nationwide base for the organization. The National Organizer and Training Coordinator will help design and implement a range of online and real-world actions (including public demonstrations, digital actions and house meetings) which people undertake through self-organization and participation in group trainings. In coordination with the Strategy Team, the National Organizer and Training Coordinator will also help develop systems and best practices for supporting these action-takers and increasing the quality of unstaffed actions, as well as lead and contribute to actions that tap action-taker energy, boast credible theories of change, and have demonstrated impact. The National Organizer and Training Coordinator will oversee a national training curriculum for action-takers, design, provide and, as appropriate, contract for, trainings that are needed by volunteers around the country - including online and in-person trainings - as well as coordinating all logistics and serving as a point of contact for partners and participants.
Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Serve as a primary point of contact for Bend the Arc action-takers operating outside of cities that have staffed Bend the Arc chapters or affiliates. This includes active one-to-one organizing of select leaders and volunteers, as well as broad availability to action-takers to troubleshoot self-directed actions and listen to the priorities and needs of this segment of the base.
- Developing, contracting for, and delivering training to volunteers and leaders around the country which supports them to take sustained and effective political action, individually and in groups. Regular travel will be required.
- Coordinating logistics for in person and online trainings, including booking venues and coordinating with on-the-ground leaders. Serving as a point of contact for training partners and participants.
- Developing, in partnership with the National Field Director and other staff, a comprehensive training curriculum for Bend the Arc action takers, and overseeing and managing this curriculum.
- Assist in drafting and/or shaping action alert emails, tool kits, training content, and other communications for this segment of the base, incorporating organizational and campaign goals.
- Run monthly or bi-monthly national calls or webinars for action-takers. Identify and plan for other opportunities to deepen volunteer engagement with the organization, such as regional gatherings.
- Assist in the research and development of models and best practices for distributed action-taking that will allow Bend the Arc to maximize its impact while remaining true to its organizational purpose and values. Help determine any additional technology and training that is needed for the role and potentially others on staff. Identify and plan for opportunities and challenges for relating this new base of leaders to Bend the Arc’s long-term leaders and organizational commitments.
- Be a voice in the room accountable to this segment of our base, participating in strategic conversations with an eye towards what will maximize their experience with the organization and best employ their passion and talents for maximum impact.
- Bring own experience, relationships, and areas of focus into the mix to help devise and drive campaigns
- Run or coordinate workshops or trainings with partners and volunteers to strengthen our network and campaigns
- Contribute to the overall strategic direction of Bend the Arc and at times support internal organizational needs, e.g. special projects.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
This is a challenging role that requires flexibility, good judgment, initiative, organizing and interpersonal skills, systems thinking, and an ability to deliver results. Skills that are central to success include:
- 2-3 years experience at the intersection of online and offline organizing, mobilization, and direct action. Understanding of how civic advocacy and public campaigning function.
- Previous professional experience or comfort working remotely both with those you are working to support and with other members of your team, including your supervisor
- Strong strategic mindset and campaign planning skills; creativity for campaign tactics and strategies.
- Highly organized, and able to manage multiple projects at once with meticulous attention to detail and without sacrificing quality.
- Mindset and skills for continuous improvement, including ability to reflect on and synthesize lessons learned, engage with constructive feedback from colleagues and participate in candid staff dialogue and deliberation.
- Team spirit—working together, trusting each other, communicating honestly, and pitching in on major projects, as well as on tasks large and small.

- Familiarity with using the VAN and associated tools

- Valid Driver’s license
Hours and Location:
This is a full-time exempt position, with evening or weekend hours based on need. We are open to applicants working from anywhere in the U.S., including but not limited to our offices in New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, or remotely.
