A Place Called Home is seeking an Athletics Assistant Coach

Reports to: Athletics Head Coach

FLSA Status: Non-exempt-Up to 40 hours per Week

Hourly Rate: $13.00-$15.00/hour DOE

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.


Under the direction of Athletic Head Coach, the Athletic Assistant Coach will plan, promote and administer athletic programs and sports teams for team sports such as: flag football, soccer, basketball, etc. and other sports, activities, and classes developed by the Athletics Department and of interest for APCH members by performing the following duties:


  • Facilitate, plan, organize athletic programs throughout APCH. (internal)
  • Interact with youth members through athletic programs.
  • Coach and coordinate leagues in varied sports
  • Oversee components of sports program: (Tutoring requirement, Evaluations, Parent-Athlete Orientations, Scheduling and Coaching Practices, Schedule and Coaching Games)
  • Research, develop and implement sports activities for members
  • Identify parents and create parent roster for participation and support
  • Ensure maintenance of recreation room and playground for cleanliness and safety in partnership with fitness team
  • Recruit APCH members for participation in athletic activities
  • Work with agency staff to enforce center rules and policies
  • Create and submit paperwork in a timely fashion (Monthly Reports, Rosters, Team Requests, Game Report Forms, Volunteer Report Forms, Evaluations)
  • Support other team members in carrying out center philosophy
  • Mentor through actions and behavior in observing dress code, language and team support
  • Program Tracking and Evaluation (Beginning and End Evaluations for athletes on all teams and athletics classes per California Standards)
  • Supervise children at all times (never leave members unattended)
  • Have ever growing knowledge base for sports. Including fundamentals, rules, and training strategies
  • Ability to recognize members who have potential to play at competitive level.
  • Have knowledge of athletic and sports scholarships and programs in the city.

Minimum of 2 -4 years’ experience in coaching youth teams and coordinating leagues

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in chaotic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Walking, standing required on daily basis
  • Sitting and use of hands/vision for computer work
  • Lift up to 30 pounds occasionally
  • Able to communicate and convey accurate information
  • Able to prepare detailed reports and conduct evaluations

Additional Information

Must be willing to work flexible schedule and weekends for events

Must work well with diverse populations of employees and clients
