FLSA Status: Non-exempt-Up to 35 hours per Week

Hourly Rate: $14.00-$16.00/hour DOE

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.


Under the direction of the Educational Services Manager, the Education Services Instructor holds the primary responsibility to develop, prepare and implement hands-on, skills based activities for members in 2nd-8th grades. These classes will provide the necessary skills for members to improve their school grades in the areas of Math and Language Arts. The Instructor will assist in the implementation of the M.A.P. (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment and will help develop an academic curriculum aligned with M.A.P./State Standards. The Instructor will provide homework assistance to elementary and middle school APCH members and will help facilitate the overall progress and success of our members in their academic and developmental process. This will involve collaborating with other department staff, as well as communicating with school teachers and parents as needed.                                                    


Under the direction of the Educational Services Manager, the Instructor will meet the following requirements and perform the following duties personally and through subordinates/interns/volunteers:

  • Develop, prepare, implement engaging, hands-on academic lesson plans for members in 2nd-8th grade
  • Develop, prepare, implement engaging classes with non-academic content for members in 2nd-8th grades
  • Collaborate to develop an academic curriculum aligned with M.A.P./ State Standards
  • Monitor and report academic progress in class and through school report card grades
  • Assist with the implementation of M.A.P. (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment
  • Provide homework assistance
  • Track attendance using the KidTrax database
  • Prepare and submit reports and provide input for Strategic Plan
  • Attend all required program meetings and professional development
  • Address student behavior appropriately and follow the approach adopted by the agency
  • Communicate with parents and school teachers as partners in the education of our members
  • Complete administrative duties as assigned and execute in a timely manner
  • Assist with the supervision of members during program hours, special events and field trips
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for members
  • Other duties may be assigned

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, English, Math, or Sciences Preferred
  • Two years experience working in academic classroom setting
  • Two years working with at risk youth

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in chaotic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Walking, standing required on daily basis
  • Sitting and use of hands/vision for computer work for extended periods of time
  • Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Able to communicate and convey accurate information
  • Type 45WPM

Additional Information

Ability to work some nights and/or weekends for department and/or agency events
