Job Title: Communications Director

Classification: Full-time, exempt position

Summary: The Communications Director is responsible for all press and communications work for LACBC. The Communications Director will play an important communications role, helping to write content for both traditional and online campaign communications and produce consistent content for the LACBC blog and other traditional and online publications. The Director will also be expected to serve as a spokesperson for LACBC in various media formats. They will have to be able to translate complicated policy-heavy material into easy to understand content suitable for a mass audience, as well overseeing the translation of content into other languages. They will build relationships with and conduct outreach to key local, state, regional, and national news and media outlets to promote LACBC and our campaigns. They will also build relationships and create new partnerships with other non-profit organizations to further online distribution and membership. They must be able to work in an extremely fast-paced environment and be responsive to media needs outside of normal business hours.

They must represent the organization with a high level of professionalism, organization, and friendliness. The Communications Director will oversee the Communications Department and supervise future communications department hires. The Communications Director reports to the Deputy Executive Director of Advancement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Advanced degree in marketing, communications, journalism, advertising or equivalent work experience (2-5 years) in the field preferred
  • Knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian advocacy a plus
  • Ability to be a public speaker
  • Self motivated, creative, detail-oriented and energetic
  • Experience working in low-income communities of color preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Google applications required
  • 2-3 years online organizing, campaigning or communications experience
  • Exceptional oral communication, writing and editing skills
  • Ability to write and speak, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to write and speak, write, and communicate effectively in Spanish preferred
  • Up-to-date experience in social media and innovative digital storytelling tools
  • Experience engaging and building relationships with reporters and other traditional media contacts
  • Experience engaging and building communities on social networks, particularly Twitter and Facebook
  • Proven success in email list building and a solid understanding of database management including list segmentation and querying
  • Experience with the use of mobile messaging tools to engage supporters
  • Skills to build and maintain relationships with bloggers and key online outlets
  • Experience using Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Ability to develop and analyze email and online metrics based on benchmarks and best practices for non-profits
  • Graphic design skills a plus
  • Project management experience
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced work environment
  • Must thrive on change, innovation, and teamwork
     

Background: The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) is a nonprofit organization that promotes bicycling for transportation and recreation throughout LA County’s 88 cities through advocacy, education and outreach. Hourly Salary: The position offers a competitive annual salary based on experience, plus health insurance benefits, two weeks paid time off in addition to regular federal/state holidays

Key Responsibilities: The Communications Director is primarily responsible for developing and executing LACBC’s communications strategies. The Communications Director is responsible for creating, tracking, and maintaining external communications for the organization.

External Communications

  • Work with LACBC staff to execute communications strategy and provide strategic input on best way to disseminate message and materials to various audiences. Expand LACBC’s reach to traditional media outlets on the state, local, and national level.
  • Oversee LACBC social media and online campaign strategy, including education-focused materials and advocacy-focused materials targeted at members, partners, potential members, and businesses/sponsors
  • Produce compelling and current content for traditional media sources, web, email blasts, social networks, and other online forums.
  • Develop—with the Membership Manager and other staff—email communications protocol, manage the email calendar, and lead implementation of emails to our list.
  • Manage and build LACBC email list.
  • Manage and expand LACBC presence on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites.
  • Coordinate LACBC’s relationships with external blogs, online news and media outlets, and partners to promote our campaigns, programs, and content.
     

Internal Communications

  • Train and educate LACBC staff to ensure that everyone shares the responsibility for leveraging web and online strategies in their work.
  • Provide guidelines and talking points for staff and board for campaigns, programs, events, and LACBC in general.
  • Address communications needs of Local Chapters by highlighting their work, amplifying their messaging, and providing tools and resources for local chapter leaders.
  • Gather and analyze metrics to improve effectiveness of online organizing, communication & marketing efforts.

  • Work as a team player to fulfill the missions and goals of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.
