The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 12th year, connects more than 90 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 650 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of global GDP. Our recent ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.
C40’s growing team of 100+ staff is headquartered in London, with offices in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 has an operating budget of c.$25m per year and is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations.
The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. A seven person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40.
The C40 City Adviser (Air Quality & Health) will be placed in the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti and work in the office of Sustainability and in collaboration with relevant teams in C40 (in particular the Transportation, Energy, Urban Planning and Waste initiatives as well as the Research team).
In Los Angeles, the City Adviser will act as the principal adviser to the City of LA on air quality issues, as well as lead on the promotion of electric vehicles and facilitate the delivery of concrete projects in these areas to help reduce LA’s GHG emissions and air pollution. The City Adviser will also draw on the City’s strong capability to share replicable best practices across C40’s thematic networks.
In addition, the City Adviser will help design, launch and lead C40’s new Health and Air Quality Programme, which would provide data and solutions to ensure that city officials are delivering and tracking impacts and improvements that will lead to improved health and air quality via the Transport, Energy, Urban Planning and Waste sectors.
The City Adviser’s relationship with the city government and other key stakeholders is critical for efficient and effective delivery. As the ‘on the ground’ ambassador in Los Angeles, the C40 City Adviser will also ensure that all actions of the organization are consistent with C40’s values and strive to strengthen the mutual respect and cooperation between the C40 and the city government.
In partnership with C40 and the City of Los Angeles, the City Adviser will develop a mutually agreed work plan that supports the city’s priorities (including clear delivery milestones) as well as designing and launching a new C40 Health and Air Quality Programme. Specifically the C40 Adviser will:

Moderate to significant travel may be required.
