POSITION: Pre-School TEACHER
PROGRAM: Early Education Program
REPORTS TO: Director
LOCATION: City of Los Angeles
The Pre-School Teacher is responsible for the general supervision and management 3 to 4 staff members and a group of 12 to 24 children between the ages of 2-5 in an early education center. Implement and coordinate programs for the classroom in accordance with the policies and procedures established by GCLA. Work closely with other team teachers and staff to meet programmatic goals and objectives and ensure all activities are conducted within a timely manner. Adaptation and modification of curriculum to meet the needs of the children enrolled. Conduct the Ages & Stages (ASQ-3 & ASQ-SE) and Desired Results System Assessment for children and families.
This role requires the ability to supervise an associate teacher and/or assistant teacher, volunteers and interns and will be responsible for following policies, procedures, and adhere to Title 22 and/or Title 5 regulations set by the State of California and the National Association the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The person filling this position must be involved in activities of professional and personal development.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Program: Ensure a successful, high quality program by mobilizing center personnel and family members to provide children with meaningful educational and enrichment programming. Follow and implement the daily developmentally appropriate practice, curriculum with goals and objectives and classroom management. Is knowledgeable of the Ages and
- Stages of development program and meet the needs of typical and special needs children. Demonstrate knowledge of all the domains of development and learning, physical, social and emotional, and cognitive growth.
- Administration: Is responsible for the overall direction of the classroom environment, health, safety, nutrition, families, communities, parent conferences, supplies and equipment. Establish priorities, organize tasks, meet set deadlines, and manage time to effectively meet the goals of the program. Ability to integrate curriculum goals and assessment to support group and individualized learning. Develop weekly lesson plans, planning webs, and ongoing assessments of children using the Desired Results System.
- Compliance: Understands, uses, and embraces professional issues and need for incorporating NAEYC codes of ethics in educational practice. Articulates program philosophy and practices. Stays informed on the latest development and research data. Maintain actual child daily attendance. Assist with the submission of monthly meal reports. Plan and implement one staff training meeting each school year. Participate in training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth. Conduct parent conferences on children’s development, adjustment and classroom behavior.
- Assessment: Maintain an ongoing, systematic assessment approach to provide information on the children’s learning and development utilizing the reporting system outlined by the California Department of Education’s Desired Results Developmental Profile Revised (DRDP-R 2015 Tech). Maintain a safe and healthy environment that provides developmentally appropriate and well-maintained indoor and outdoor physical environments based on Accreditation Standards and criteria of NAEYC, HARM’s Early Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS-R) and the County of Los Angeles Steps to Excellence Project (STEP), a child care quality rating and support system. Working understanding of the Creative Curriculum for pre-school and the major theories behind developmentally appropriate practice, California Infant/Toddler Learning & Development Foundation and Preschool Curriculum Framework & Foundation.
- Teamwork: Participate in general staff and teacher’s team meetings to ensure services are provided to meet program goals and objectives. Models and promotes understanding of emotional, social and moral physical development of children and adults.
- Professional Development and Quality Improvement: Participate in career-related and job-related professional development ongoing activities. You will develop an individualized training plan. Teachers will have specialized college-level course work or professional development training in early childhood development, annual self assessment, professional development training, program’s curriculum and child assessment, special needs, developmental stages, and ages.
- Health & Safety: Promote wellness to safeguard the health and safety of children and adults. Take steps to reduce occupational hazards such as infectious disease.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated experience relating to child development program implementation.
- Extensive experience relating to teaching logistical skills to fulfill position responsibilities.
- Ability to work with a diverse population and motivate children and their families to meet program goals.
- Ability to deliver anti-bias education to young children, families and the community.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, program participants, families and members of the public.
- Exceptional communication skills (oral and written) to establish a positive and active reciprocal relationship with parents and/or guardians.
- Ability to understand diverse family dynamics and structure and conflict resolution
- Ability to develop and modify effective daily curriculum, weekly activities, reports and lesson plans.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in an environment characterized by multiple, simultaneous demands.
- Must be able to report to work on time on a consistent basis.
- Must have a working knowledge of DRDP-R 2015 Tech, ASQ-3, ASQ-SE and Teach stone CLASS Dimensions Pre-K and Toddlers.
EVALUATION AND PLANNING:
Plan, assess, and collect facts (observations, dictation & work samples) to analyze and evaluate, report on children’s developmental progress to prepare for each child and the group. Maintain up-to-date records on children and/or families. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with each child’s family to support the children’s optimal development and learning. Conduct 2-3 annual family conferences in order to share information about each child’s education and development with an open door policy for families.
- Bachelors Degree in Child Development or working toward it. Hold a Teacher or Master Child Development Teacher Permit (or higher). Have experience in an instructional capacity in a child development center working with children 2-5 years old during the previous 3 to 5 years.
- Occasionally lifting and carrying toddlers (20 to 25 lbs) 10 to 15 feet.
- Computer Literacy: Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook, to produce reports and track performance information
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred but not mandatory.
- Possess a current Pediatric/Adult First Aid and CPR Certifications
- Criminal background clearance.
- A current Health Screening Report with negative TB test completed by or under direction of a physician.
- Record of immunized against influenza, pertussis and measles or exempt by a licensed physician
Monday through Friday (30-40 hours per week)

A performance appraisal will be conducted at the end of introductory period and yearly. The performance appraisal will include multiple sources of evidence. Formal observation to assess and improve teaching practice will be conducted at least three times a year and ongoing feedback.
