Los Angeles Maritime Institute, has now surpassed 30 years and focuses on delivering extraordinary and transformational programs for youth. Our primary focus is on middle school students while also serving upper elementary, high school and college students. In addition to STEM/educational voyages, LAMI provides ocean experiences for special events.
Located in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach the Los Angeles Maritime Institute is a year round operation. We are currently managing three tall ships; the twin brigantines Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson which are 110’ with 13 sails and the 130’ three masted schooner American Pride. Our area of service includes the Port Complex (Los Angeles and Long Beach), from San Diego to Santa Barbara, the Northern Channel Islands and Catalina Island.

Roles & responsibilities
As a Relief Captain you will be responsible for all elements of your vessel including safety, crew, training, executing education programs, and maintenance. Enthusiasm for sailing and interacting with school age youth and the general public is essential.
* responsible for overseeing daily vessel checks, preparing voyage plans, and preparing the
vessel for sails.
*responsible for the overall safety of the boats, crew, and passengers
*responsible for training crew, including mates, deckhands, volunteers, and student trainees.
*create maintenance and safety schedules for the vessels, and work with crew to maintain
seaworthiness of the vessel.
* work with the office staff to create schedules and programs for the ships.
*are expected to be educators and participate in Los Angeles Maritime Institutes mission.
Lessons include water chemistry, sail handling, navigation, ocean plastics, mechanical
advantage, knots, maritime history, and the physics of sailing.
*must participate in maintaining all vessels and assets to Los Angeles Maritime Institute,
including our four vessels, 2 company vehicles, dock, and Building G.
*must work long days, including weekends and holidays, standing night watches, and be on
call 24/7 to help with the ship's needs.
*Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred
A 100 ton Master’s License with Aux. Sail endorsement, and FCC MROP preferred. Candidates should have solid sailing experience, with demonstrable boat handling skills in tight quarters. Prior education and/or hospitality and/or passenger boat experience is a plus.
Ability to pass DOT background check and drug test
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS:
License Required: Master Tonnage: 100t
Where Sails: near coastal
ability to maintain valid driver’s license
Medical: CPR
