Position Overview

The Development Director is responsible for cultivating and soliciting new corporate sponsorships to drive new revenue growth for City Year Los Angeles.

The Development Director will be a highly effective storyteller and relationship builder who can bring to life City Year’s impact in schools using strong presentation and communication skills that capture the hearts and minds of potential corporate partners and inspire them to join City Year through investment of financial resources, in-kind donations, and expertise.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Development, the Director is responsible for leveraging existing site relationships and leading independent outreach via targeted prospecting, conference and event attendance and other activities as needed to build a robust pipeline of potential corporate partners. The Director will develop criteria to prioritize prospects and allocate time and resources appropriately to ensure maximum return for City Year. They will grow and maintain a portfolio of potential partnership opportunities, including benefits and activation concepts that align with City Year program activities and the site’s long-term growth goals.

This position is ideal for someone who is entrepreneurial with proven fundraising/business development experience who is looking to take the next step to grow their skills and impact at one of the largest sites of a fast-paced national non-profit. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader, creative problem solver and strategic thinker with an aptitude for relationship development. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a passion and commitment to helping students reach their potential.

Responsibilities

Job Description

Support the advancement of City Year’s mission by identifying potential corporate supporters and creating mutually beneficial relationships with them. This will entail working collaboratively across our organization to not only prepare tailored proposals that fit their needs, but also to leverage the necessary support of our board and external champions to ultimately secure successful partnerships for the site.

 

Corporate Revenue Strategy

  • Create and lead a corporate new business development and partnership strategy that increases City Year’s corporate giving in the L.A. market by $500K-$1M in the first 18 months, with a goal to continue to expand corporate support significantly on an ongoing basis.
  • Diversify City Year’s corporate base of support in key focus areas including the financial services, legal and tech sectors.
     

New Corporate Sponsorship Cultivation

  • Secure $250,000 in revenue for corporate service days annually.
  • Identify, engage, and cultivate a pipeline of corporate prospects that can make annual and multiyear investments at the $25,000+ level with an emphasis on the $100,000 “team sponsor” level.
  • Frequently attend networking events and create networking opportunities in an effort to continuously expand the community of City Year supporters and donors.
  • Leverage existing City Year programs, including Team Sponsorships, Program Sponsorships, Corporate Service days and Spring Break fundraiser, as well as create new initiatives, to bring in additional corporate funding.
     

Existing Partnership Management

  • Supervise and develop Corporate Development Manager, including performance management, performance improvement, weekly one-on-one meetings, mid-year and end-of-year reviews.
  • Support Corporate Development Manager in maintaining corporate partnerships through consistent and thoughtful stewardship ensuring appropriate frequency of outreach, communication, appreciation and involvement.
  • Manage Corporate Development Manager to retain approximately $1.2M in existing sponsorships.
     

Site Support and Leadership

  • Partner with all City Year Los Angeles departments through applicant interview process, service day participation and cross-departmental committees as needed to ensure site-wide goals are met.
  • Proactively partner with leadership and development team to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward new partnerships.
     

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with at least 4 years of work experience
  • Non-profit fundraising, business development, and/or partnership management experience
  • Self-starter able to work well independently and as a team member
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, especially marketing and sponsorship communications
  • Ability to meet deadlines, plan ahead and balance multiple high-profile partner priorities simultaneously
  • Proven presentation, negotiation and liaison skills are required
  • Flexibility to meet sudden and unpredictable partnership needs and willingness to work outside standard established business hours
  • Passion for service and the City Year mission
  • City Year/AmeriCorps experience a plus
  • Familiarity with Salesforce a plus

  • Communication: Ability to communicate mission and vision to diverse audiences using creative storytelling to connect to individual/corporate passions and purpose; clearly articulates information and ideas orally and in writing.
  • Desire to learn: City Year has a unique service model and organizational culture. Successful applicants will have strong experience and a proven track record of success in the above areas, but must also be willing and eager to continue to learn.
     

Compensation And Benefits
