About this organization

Clockshop works with artists to deepen the connection between communities and public land, in order to build a shared vision of a future based in belonging and care.

As a Los Angeles-based arts and culture nonprofit, Clockshop produces free public programming and commissions contemporary artist projects on public land to better connect Angelenos to the land we live on.

We address the climate crisis as a cultural problem that requires equitable cultural solutions. Through long-term collaborations with artists, like-minded partners, and local stakeholders, Clockshop promotes ecological stewardship and climate resilience among the communities we serve.

Our projects center working-class communities of color in Los Angeles and aim to support the wellbeing and vitality of multiple communities. Whether Indigenous, African American, Latinx, Asian American, Pacific Islander, or immigrants living in LA, we shape the city’s future together.

We bring this mission to our work at Los Angeles State Historic Park in Chinatown and Rio de Los Angeles State Park (The Bowtie) in Glassell Park, in collaboration with California State Parks.

Clockshop was founded by filmmaker Julia Meltzer in 2004 and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We do not accept unsolicited portfolios or proposals.

About this job

The Education & Programs Intern’s primary duties and responsibilities entail assisting with and coordinating the production of Clockshop’s slate of programming: (1) related to upcoming artist commission projects, (2) specialized youth and family initiatives, and (3) Clockshop’s quarterly Reading & Listening by Moonrise program. The intern should come prepared with strong self-management, organizational, research, and communication skills (verbal and written). As an organization that works on public lands to deepen relationships between communities and the land they live on through arts and cultural work, we seek an individual with a passion for and interest in education, environmental justice, contemporary art, public programming, and creative public engagement.

(1) The intern will work on supporting the research and coordination of public programming related to Clockshop’s artist commission project at the LA State Historic Park in Chinatown (opening in September 2024) led by the Curatorial & Programs team. This commission will be a series of sculptures referencing the visual languages, histories, and utilities of the channelized Los Angeles River and will be activated for gatherings and performances.

(2) Clockshop is instituting year-round youth and family-focused programming with a 5-week pilot in the Summer of 2024 between July and August. The Summer Arts & Advocacy Youth Fellowship is designed for high-school-aged youth in Northeast Los Angeles to deepen their relationship to the land they live on as future stewards and advocates and increase their access to contemporary arts education (with a focus on art in public places) and environmental activism. The Education & Programs Intern will support the Youth Programs Specialist in the coordination and execution of the 5-week pilot program.

(3) The intern will also support the coordination and execution of one Listening by Moonrise program, which will occur in July, led by the Curatorial & Programs team. Listening by Moonrise is a quarterly music series held at the Los Angeles State Historic Park on the eve of the full moon (or as close to it as possible) that features performances and immersive sound experiences with leading multi-disciplinary sound artists.

The intern will be primarily supervised by the Project Manager, with alternate supervision by the Youth Programs Specialist by project.

Roles & responsibilities

This position will liaise between Clockshop and collaborators like artists, speakers and instructors, outside vendors, and various institutional collaborators, including California State Parks and other agencies. Their work will include extensive email communication, scheduling, research, notetaking, production logistics, site photography, sourcing equipment, coordinating translation, producing and editing printed collateral, creative outreach, and staffing events. The intern will assist in various event-related tasks, such as set-up and take-down, greeting visitors, coordinating food and drink, and managing sign-in sheets. The intern will also have a direct teaching and facilitation role in the Youth Fellowship, helping to execute curriculum and supporting students in their learning and growth over the course of the five weeks. General administrative and operational tasks may also be assigned to the Intern, including office and equipment maintenance, managing inventories, and organizing digital and physical files.
